Read aloud to your child regularly. - Read stories chosen by your child. - Read novels chapter by chapter as a serial. - Use picture books, even with older children. Read Together. - Cook together using a recipe. - Share interesting stories from newspapers or magazines. - Check the weather or sports results in newspapers. - Read the mail: letters, emails, flyers and notices. Give your child real-life reading and writing jobs. - Follow the map when you go on a trip. - Read bus and train schedules. - Find numbers in a telephone book. - Jot down phone messages. - Make a shopping list. - Send postcards and greeting cards. Make sure your child enjoys reading. - Praise success. - Talk about what you like to read. - Give books as gifts. - Let your child see you reading for pleasure and information. - Visit the public library.
